National Irish Coffee Day

January 25, 2015

“Cream as rich as an Irish brogue; coffee as strong as a friendly hand; sugar sweet as the tongue of a rogue; and whiskey smooth as the wit of the land.”

Only the Irish could turn a drink recipe into lyrical prose that warms your heart, before the drink ever touches your lips.  The origin story of Irish coffee goes that Joe Sheridan, a bartender at Foynes Airbase in Ireland, invented the drink in 1942. A group of weary and cold passengers arrived at teh small airport hub in southwest Ireland after a miserably cold eighteen-hour journey across the Atlantic Ocean. In his attempt to lift their spirits and warm their hearts, Joe brewed hot coffee, added a splash of whiskey, and collared the drink with whipped creme. Joe offered the concoction to the travelers. According to legend, one of the passengers asked him, “Is this Brazilian coffee?” and Joe laughed and said, “No, that’s Irish coffee.”

A perfect Irish Coffee should look pretty much like that other famous Irish drink – Guinness!

Ingredients:

1 ½ oz. of Jameson Irish whiskey7146b19a0dac558d86c1ce9db755bc38

5-7 oz. hot coffee or 2 shots of espresso

1-2 tsp. brown sugar

Fresh whipped cream

Instructions:

Run hot water slowly over a glass mug until it’s at room temperature or hotter, and then dry it (pouring hot coffee into a cold glass could cause it to crack)

Add brown sugar to mug

Pour in whiskey

Add coffee or espresso, leaving space at top for whipped cream

Stir until sugar is completely dissolved

Set whipped cream on drink

Do not stir (drink stays warmer longer with the cream sitting on top, and the warm sweet coffee is meant to be sipped through the luxurious creme)
